On 7th September, 1916, 10th Royal Fusiliers of 111 Brigade, 37th Division moved into the front line trenches in the Left Calonne sub-sector, some three miles to the west of Lens. At this time this was not a very active part of the line but on 8th September, in retaliation for some trench mortar fire, the enemy bombarded, intermittently throughout the day, the front line and support trenches held by 10th Royal Fusiliers. The Battalion Diary records that there was no damage done except for one ‘unlucky shot’ which killed five men and wounded another two. One of those killed was William Fell. |
